Local Spotlight: KiDiMu
We are well on our way into 2019 and that means we are in for a long stretch of winter—short days, cold air, and perhaps even a few snowflakes. Though we may not be spending as much time outdoors as we’d like, there’s still plenty to do on the Island. This month, we are highlighting a place that brings fun every day of the year: KiDiMu!
With a mission “to spark children’s curiosity through play and experiential learning,” KiDiMu is a wonderful place for kiddos, parents and caregivers to learn and be entertained by hands-on exhibits, art projects, science and more.
From Messy Monday and Tuesday Tunes to Discovery Friday, there is always something going on at the museum. Many attendees look forward to the first Thursday of the month, when admission is free. On February 7th, officer Carla Sias of the Bainbridge Island Police Department will join for playtime from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and Lisa Racine, librarian from the Bainbridge Public Library, will read a story at 3 p.m. Members receive unlimited access for a full year plus gift shop discounts, access to members-only events, special pricing for parties, and more.
Current Exhibitions
What makes KiDiMu such an excellent place is that it gives children of all ages the change to explore and interact with art and science through hands-on activities and installations.
Our Town (pictured below), is a miniature Bainbridge Island filled with interactive elements including an electric car, grocery store, medical center, ferry and more.
The Science and Literacy Hall (below left), provides a look at fundamentals such as gravity, velocity and friction, with a focus on the “wow” moments of science. Those with tots—aged 0 to 30 months—will love Totally TOT, a tranquil space with padded floors and toys/books for those working on crawling and taking their first steps.
Finally, Pirate Tree House is a hub for pirates-in-training where brave explorers “will play dress-up, climb up the ladder, steer the vessel into the unknown and get a bird’s-eye view of KiDiMu to finally slide down a giant slide onto another adventure.”
