Get Ready for Spring Gardening with the Bainbridge Grange

The Bainbridge Grange will host a special day on urban farming on Saturday, March 29, 9:00am until 3:00pm.

Local farmer, Brian MacWhorter, will be on hand to share tips and answer questions about starting your garden and extending your gardening season. John Barutt, a master composter, will share his composting expertise, and Becky Warner, of City Grown Seattle, will speak on strategies for gardening in small spaces. To help you get ready for spring planting and growing, the Grange will have Brian’s vegetable plant starts for sale.

Proceeds will benefit the Grange Hall. Come for one session or all four, and maximize your food growing power!

The speaker schedule for the day:

Session 1: 10:00-10:45
Season Extension with Brian MacWhorter of Butler Green Farms
Discuss what you can do to extend your growing season by using small hoop structures. Kits, to create a 4 -foot wide mini greenhouse, will be available for purchase.

Session 2: 11:00-11:45:
Making the most of your space with Becky Warner, City Grown Seattle
Learn strategies to increase production in small gardens by trellising, choosing plant varieties, and intensive spacing. 

Session 3: 1:00 – 1:45:
Backyard Composting with John Barutt, Master Composter
Discuss using the composting process to turn debris into a valuable soil amendment.

Session 4: 2:00-2:45
Starting your Garden with Brian MacWhorter of Butler Green Farms
Discuss early and late season plants and how to get a jump- start on the growing season by using plant starts.
